Stretching - Low Back Pain Exercises 101
by Mike Perlman

Most of the time, low back pain is a result of an imbalance between tissues which are muscles, ligaments and tendons that surround the spine. Another is an incorrect spine alignment because of bad posture. The ideal posture is when the spinal column is in neutral position and forms a gentle sloping S-shape. A good way to prevent these problems is by doing low back pain exercises.

One of the most recommended low back pain exercise is yoga. When done properly and practised regularly, yoga can be the most helpful in preventing low back pain. The following are three yoga poses that can relieve low back pain. Each of the pose should be held from five to ten seconds. This depends on your level of comfort. Do these on a mat or other soft, supportive surface.

1. The corpse

* Lie flat on your back

* Rest your arms at your side, palms down, let your legs fall naturally with the knees turned out slightly.

* If you feel pain in your back when you turn your knees outward, lie with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.

* Breathe in and out, and allow the tension to leave the body.

2. Cat stretch

* With a flat back, start on your hands and knees.

* Your hands must be directly under your shoulders, fingers spread.

* Knees must be directly under the hips.

* Hold your head loosely so you are looking at the floor between your hands.

* Breathe in. As you breathe out, arch your back upwards, tucking your chin into your chest so you that are looking at your navel. Tuck your tailbone underneath.

* Hold, then release. Return to your original position.

3. Wind-releasing pose

* Lie on your back

* Inhale while bending your knee

* Place your hands right below the knee and draw the leg towards your chest.

* Keep your left leg on the floor.

* Exhale as you bring your forehead up to touch your knee.

* Inhale. Then exhale as you return to your original position.

* Repeat with your left leg.

Low back pain exercises are helpful to speed up recovery from low back pain. It also helps in strengthening the back and abdominal muscles. For people with skeletal irregularities, maintaining and building muscle strength is advised.
